چکیده

Ahstraet-A linear perturbation method is used to solve the two-dimensional heat conduction problem in which a liquid, initially at the melting temperature, becomes solidified by heat transfer to a plane mold the temperature of which is approximately uniform, but contains a small sinusoidal perturbation in one space dimension. Results are obtained for the consequent sinusoidal perturbation in the melt/solid boundary as a function of time and for the temperature distribution throughout the solid shell. These results are expressed in terms of a series of coniluent hypergeometric functions which shows good convergence for practical values of material properties and temperatures. The inverse problem, in which the melt/solid boundary is prescribed and the mold temperature is to be determined, is also briefly discussed.

Sinusoidal perturbation solution for solidification of pure materials on a planar mold of finite thickness

A linear perturbation method is used to solve two-dimensional heat conduction problem in which a liquid becomes solidified by heat transfer to a plane mold of finite thickness. Heat flux drawn from the lower surface of the mold is approximately uniform, but contains a small sinusoidal perturbation in one space dimension. Numerical results are obtained for the consequent sinusoidal perturbation ...

Selection of doublet cellular patterns in directional solidification through spatially periodic perturbations

Pattern formation at the solid-liquid interface of a growing crystal was studied in directional solidification using a perturbation technique. We analyzed both experimentally and numerically the stability range and dynamical selection of cellular arrays of ‘‘doublets’’ with asymmetric tip shapes, separated by alternate deep and shallow grooves. Applying an initial periodic perturbation of arbit...

Thermoelastic Instability in Planar Solidification

-A linear perturbation method is used to examine the stability of a unidirectional solidification problem in which a liquid, initially at the melting temperature, becomes solidified by heat transfer across a pressure-dependent thermal contact resistance to a plane mold. The contact pressure will be influenced by thermal distortion in response to the instantaneous temperature field in the solidi...

Planar Solidification from Undercooled Melt: An Approximation of a Dilute Binary Alloy for a Phase-field Model

Abstract. Planar solidification from an undercooled melt has been considered using the phase-field model. The solute and the phase fields have been found in the limit of small impurity concentration. These solutions in the limit of vanishing velocity of the interface motion give the equilibrium partition coefficient and the liquidus slope. Asymptotic expansions for the solute and for the phase ...

Approximate analytical solution of a two-dimensional heat conduction problem with phase-change on a sinusoidal mold

A two-dimensional heat conduction problem in which a liquid becomes solidified by heat transfer to a sinusoidal mold of finite thickness is solved by using a linear perturbation method. The liquid perfectly wets the sinusoidal mold surface prior to the beginning of solidification. This leads to a corresponding undulation of the solidified shell thickness. Both surfaces of the mold follow a sinu...
